When I first started playing pickleball, my only goal was to have fun and get some exercise. But as I got hooked on this addictive sport, my ambitions began to grow. Suddenly, I found myself setting all sorts of goals! From improving my rating to mastering dinking to even starting this blog and becoming a PPR certified pickleball coach.
The more I talk to other pickleball players, the more I realize how diverse everyone’s motivations are. For some, the pure joy of playing and socializing is enough. Others relish the competitive drive, fixating on drilling and crushing anyone that steps onto the court, regardless of age or ability (booooo!). But most see pickleball as a path to better overall fitness and wellness.
So what are the most common objectives picklers set for themselves? And what are the best practices for making steady progress toward those goals? If you are looking at how to improve your pickleball game, read on!
The Goal: Achieve a 4.0 rating and be able to compete successfully in 4.0 level tournaments.
To achieve a 4.0 rating and compete successfully at that level, a consistent training regimen is crucial. Regularly drill specific shots and strategies with coaches or advanced players who can provide feedback. Film yourself playing to identify weaknesses to focus on improving. Play frequently against opponents at your target level or higher to raise your game. Analyze your tournament performances to pinpoint areas needing work. Develop emotional toughness by learning to maintain composure in pressure situations. With dedicated practice, an openness to make adjustments, and a positive mindset, you can make steady progress toward that 4.0 goal and start thriving in 4.0 tournament play.
The Goal: Develop an extremely consistent and accurate third shot drop to neutralize the opposition’s offense.
Mastering the third shot drop to neutralize your opponents’ offense requires diligent, focused practice. Spend numerous sessions specifically drilling this shot from different positions, working on consistently executing with the perfect blend of touch, spin, and court placement. Film yourself and get feedback on your technique. Once you’ve developed sound mechanics, integrate game-situation reps where you approach the non-volley zone at game speed and drop it in. Commit to maintaining this skill through daily drop practice routines. With enough quality repetitions ingraining the right movements, you’ll gain the consistency to deploy this weapon and disrupt the opposing team’s attacks.
The Goal: Get in better cardiovascular shape by using pickleball as a fitness activity.
Getting in better cardiovascular shape through pickleball requires an intentional approach to turn your playing time into an effective workout. Warm up thoroughly before sessions to prepare your body for intense bursts of movement. During games, go full effort on every point, lunging and sprinting to retrieve shots rather than taking a casual jog. Mix in cross-court and diagonal footwork drills between games to keep your heart rate elevated. Consider playing singles matches which demand even more running and endurance. Finish clinics or drill sessions with running lines or other stamina exercises. Monitoring your effort level and heart rate can ensure you’re pushing yourself into the optimal cardiovascular zone during play. With commitment and hard work, pickleball will whip you into stellar aerobic condition.
The Goal: Make new friends and expand one’s social circle by joining a pickleball club or league.
Making new friends and expanding your social circle through a pickleball club or league requires being outgoing and putting yourself out there. Show up early before sessions to introduce yourself to new faces and strike up conversations. Ask players about themselves – where they’re from, how long they’ve played, etc. Listen attentively and find common interests to bond over. Volunteer for club activities or committees to interact more with the core members. Invite fellow players out for food or drinks after playing. Once you hit it off with people, propose forming a regular game group to cement the connections. The more you immerse yourself in the social fabric, the quicker acquaintances will blossom into meaningful friendships enriching your life off the courts.
The Goal: Improve consistency on serving with a goal of getting a very high percentage of serves in play.
Improving your serving consistency to get an extremely high percentage of serves in play requires a dedicated practice regime focused solely on that skill. Start by breaking down your service motion step-by-step with a coach or instructor to ensure proper technique. Film yourself and make adjustments until your mechanics are sound. Then it’s all about repetition – spend numerous sessions hitting hundreds of serves, ingraining the correct movements into muscle memory. Mix in serving drills like trying to hit consecutive targets or playing service games. Analyze misses and make adjustments. The key is being hyper-focused during each serving practice on clicking into that perfect, repeatable stroke. With enough diligent, thoughtful practice, you’ll develop a nearly automatic, consistent serve that reliably starts points in your favor.
No matter what initially draws someone to pickleball, almost everyone finds themselves setting new goals as they get hooked on this incredibly addictive sport. Whether it’s coveting a specific rating achievement, laser-focusing on a particular shot, prioritizing fitness, or simply aiming to grow your social circle, there are so many productive objectives to pursue.
The key is identifying your personal motivations, laying out a thoughtful plan for attaining that goal, and staying dedicated to putting in the hard work required. It won’t be easy – anything worthwhile never is. You’ll inevitably hit plateaus and face frustrations along the way.
So keep drilling those third-shot drops. Introduce yourself to new players at the park. Stay positive and have fun with the process. If you persevere with purpose and an open mindset, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish through this incredible game we all love so much. The journey is worth every ounce of sweat equity.
