Make a free DUPR account, then get one valid match onto it. That can be a club, league or tournament result, or a self-reported game your opponents confirm. You’ll land somewhere on DUPR’s 2.000–8.000 scale. A DUPR Coach or an AI video assessment can also give you a starting number. DUPR+ ($19.99 a year) is optional, and most beginners don’t need it yet.
Sooner or later, someone at open play is going to turn to you between games and ask, “What’s your DUPR?”
If you came from tennis like I did, you know this move. It’s “What’s your UTR?” with a paddle in your hand.
Good news first. You don’t need a DUPR to show up and play. But the moment you want a league, a skill-capped round robin, or your first tournament, that number is how you get in the door. And DUPR has changed a lot in the last 18 months. New algorithm. A paid reset. A paid tier. A deal with USA Pickleball.
So here’s how it works right now, as of October 2026. Just what I’d want to know if I were starting over.
DUPR in 30 Seconds
- It’s a number from 2.000 to 8.000. New players show “NR,” which just means Not Rated.
- The core rating is free. DUPR’s own DUPR+ page says so.
- One valid match gets you rated. DUPR assigns a number right after your first valid match is entered.
- Organized play counts more. Club, league and tournament results outweigh games you self-report.
- Winning isn’t enough. Since July 2025, your rating moves on how you scored versus what was expected.
- USA Pickleball runs on DUPR. It’s the official, exclusive rating at USA Pickleball-owned events, Golden Tickets and Nationals included.
What Is DUPR?
DUPR stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. (Yes, it made our beginner slang guide.) It’s one scale for everybody: any age, any gender, anywhere. DUPR calls it a “modified Elo” system. In normal-person terms, your new rating is your old rating plus whatever you just did on court.
Here’s how DUPR labels the scale:
| DUPR range | DUPR’s label |
|---|---|
| NR | Not Rated (no valid matches yet) |
| 2.000–2.999 | Novice |
| 3.000–3.999 | Intermediate |
| 4.000–4.999 | Advanced |
| 5.000–8.000 | Professional |
DUPR says four things move your number:
- Performance vs. expectation. The big one. It gets its own section below.
- Match type. Verified club, league and tournament matches beat self-posted games. Best-of-three counts more than a single game to 11.
- Recency. Today’s match matters more than one from six months ago.
- Volume. Early on, your rating jumps around. Once matches pile up, each new one nudges it less.
Don’t stare at the decimals yet. Your first rating is a rough draft, not a verdict.
Is DUPR Free, or Do I Need DUPR+?
The rating is free. DUPR+ is the paid add-on, and you don’t need it to get rated.
When I checked the DUPR+ page on October 12, 2026, it was $19.99 a year. That gets you:
- An “AI-Enhanced DUPR Rating”
- DUPR Insights stats and a monthly recap called DUPR Replay
- Metro rankings (U.S. only)
- A Verified Player checkmark
- Partner perks (a JOOLA gift card, Club Cash) that vary by country
Your free account still shows your Reliability Score, record, career high, and mixed and age-based ratings, depending on what you’ve played.
Where DUPR+ actually matters is DUPR Verified events. Those require DUPR+ and a verified phone number, and their results count more toward your rating. The Dink Minor League Pickleball is one of the leagues that went Verified for 2026.
My take? I’ve spent plenty on pickleball stuff I didn’t need yet. Don’t add a subscription to that pile. If you’re playing open play and the odd round robin, skip it. Buy DUPR+ the day an event you actually want to enter requires it. Not before.
How Do I Get My First DUPR Rating?
Before you make an account, check whether you already have one. Tournament directors and clubs create profiles for players all the time, and DUPR’s help center says to search for and claim an existing account first. Make a duplicate and you’ll be emailing support to merge them.
Then:
- Create or claim your account in the app or at dupr.com. Verify your email and set your location.
- Get one valid match onto it. There are four ways:
- Play a DUPR-reported event. Thousands of clubs, leagues and tournaments send results straight to DUPR. Cleanest route by far.
- Self-report a match in the app. Everyone else in the match has to validate it, and if anyone denies it, it’s gone. It counts, just for less.
- Book a DUPR Coach. A credentialed coach assesses you and assigns a starting rating. DUPR bought DUPR Coach in July 2026, when the program had 2,000+ coaches and had issued 30,000+ coach-assigned ratings. Around New York? DUPR named PKLYN in Gowanus the city’s first official DUPR Assessment Center in February 2025. Call before you go to make sure they’re still running sessions. (Curious about cost? Here’s what pickleball lessons cost.)
- Upload video to an AI partner. Never played a DUPR match? PB Vision and other partners can produce a starting AI rating. Our interview with PB Vision co-founder Ryan Hampton gets into how that works.
- Play 10 to 15 more matches before you trust it. That’s from DUPR’s September 2026 post. Their homepage says 10 to 20. Either way, give it a few weeks.
What if everyone in my group is brand new? DUPR says that when a match has only unrated players, it treats everyone as roughly 3.5. Then it moves the winners above 3.5 and the losers below. So your first number might look strange. That’s normal, and it settles as you play more people.
Should I self-report my Tuesday games? You can. They just count less, and they didn’t count at all toward the 2026 Reset. If you want a number that holds up at a tournament check-in table, play a few club round robins that report to DUPR.
Why Did My DUPR Go Down After I Won?
Because DUPR rates the score, not the W.
On July 8, 2025, DUPR switched to “performance vs. expectation”. Before every match, it calculates an expected score from everyone’s ratings. Beat that and you go up, even in a loss. Fall short and you go down, even in a win.
DUPR’s own example: a team expected to win 11–3 wins 11–8. Their rating drops. The team that lost goes up.
People were not thrilled. In October 2025, DUPR answered the backlash by pointing out that match uploads had grown, not shrunk.
Here’s why beginners should actually like it: losing 9–11 to a better team can move you up. It also means you can’t coast after jumping out 8–1. (If you’re chasing 4.0, this is where the real work is.)
Before you play, check DUPR Impact in the app’s Forecast tab. It shows how any scoreline would move your rating. Fair warning: it’s a little addictive.
What Is the DUPR Reliability Score?
It’s a 1–100% number next to your rating that shows how much match history is backing it up.
Here’s what DUPR says about it:
- It looks at match volume, where those matches came from, and how many different partners and opponents you’ve had over the last 6–12 months.
- It updates every Tuesday.
- It drops when you stop playing.
- Singles and doubles each get their own.
- Clubs often use it as an entry requirement.
DUPR’s 2024 launch post called 60% or higher reliable. So if an event lists a reliability minimum, that’s why your brand-new 3.4 might not get you in yet. The fix is boring but it works: play more, with more different people.
Why Do I Have More Than One DUPR?
Singles and doubles are separate ratings because they’re separate games. Soft hands at the kitchen line don’t cover a whole singles court.
In April 2026, DUPR added subscores: a Mixed Doubles rating plus 50+ and 65+ doubles ratings. It also added a Career High stat, which is either motivating or depressing depending on your week.
How Do Tournaments and Leagues Use DUPR Now?
- USA Pickleball: Since a December 5, 2025 agreement, DUPR is the official, exclusive rating for USA Pickleball-owned events. Golden Ticket events require a DUPR account connected to your tournament profile. Register below your DUPR and you’ll get moved up. USA Pickleball also says it sanctions other tournaments that use either DUPR or UTR.
- PPA amateur events: The 2026 Powerball state championships on PickleballTournaments.com list DUPR as required.
- Pickleball.com software: Directors can rank rating sources. If your DUPR account has no valid rating, the system can fall back to another rating or your self-rating.
- Leagues: The Dink Minor League Pickleball builds divisions from combined team DUPR, like a “DUPR 16” division.
For my fellow tennis converts: the UTR-P experiment is mostly over. Forbes reported in December 2025 that the APP and USA Pickleball moved their 2026 events to platforms that feed DUPR.
What About the DUPR Reset?
DUPR ran its first paid Reset in 2026. It cost $34.99. Registration ran through May 17, and matches had to be submitted by May 31.
To qualify, you needed at least 8 non-self-reported matches with 2 or more different partners or opponents. At the end, you kept whichever was higher: your Reset rating or your original one.
DUPR said 53% of participants ended higher, and nine in ten moved less than 0.3. Critics, Picklepedia among them, argued DUPR was charging players to fix a problem it created. As of October 12, 2026, no new Reset period has been announced.
No rating yet? None of this applies to you. Skip it.
The Bottom Line
Your DUPR is a measuring tape, not a report card.
Get one for free. Play club events that report results. Ignore the third decimal for your first 15 matches. Don’t pay for DUPR+ until an event makes you.
Then go play. That’s the part that matters.
DUPR for Beginners FAQ
Is DUPR free? Yes. A DUPR account and your core rating are free. DUPR+ is an optional paid membership, listed at $19.99 a year on DUPR’s site as of October 12, 2026.
How many matches do I need for a DUPR rating? One valid match gets you a rating. DUPR recommends 10 to 15 matches before you fully trust it.
Can I rate myself on DUPR? Not directly. Your rating comes from match results, a DUPR Coach assessment or an AI video assessment. Some tournament software can fall back to a self-rating if you don’t have a valid DUPR.
What is a good DUPR for a beginner? DUPR labels 2.000–2.999 as Novice and 3.000–3.999 as Intermediate. Where you start matters less than whether you’re trending up after 15 matches.
Can my DUPR go down if I win? Yes. If you win by less than expected based on everyone’s ratings, your rating can drop. Lose by less than expected and it can rise.
